Kimberley's Story

Kimberley and her daughter Luna have been part of the Early Intervention community since 2022, first becoming involved when Kimberley volunteered at a soft play trip for children who had completed speech and language therapy sessions. From there, they became regular faces within the community. Kimberley volunteered at outdoor learning sessions with Aberdeen City Council Countryside Rangers and, while studying for her Law degree, helped create opportunities for children who were home educated or struggling to engage with school. She also supported our first Summer Holiday Programme in July 2022, at a time when many families were still finding it difficult to access inclusive activities following the pandemic. Growing Together Luna first attended Early Intervention activities during the Easter holidays in 2022. Over the years, she has grown from a child taking part in activities into a confident young helper who enjoys sharing her ideas and getting involved behind the scenes. For Kimberley, this is an important part of what makes Early Intervention different — children and families aren't simply attending activities; they become part of a community where they are welcomed, valued and encouraged to contribute.

Lived and Professional Experience

Kimberley brings both lived and professional experience to Early Intervention. She has training in health, social care and education support, has worked within two local authority schools and now works for a multinational retailer, where she has helped develop sensory-friendly shopping experiences.

Alongside that professional experience, Kimberley understands personally how difficult accessing appropriate support can be. Her family waited four years for Luna's assessments and diagnosis.

“Having experienced delays in accessing support ourselves, I understand how important it is for families to have somewhere they feel welcomed and understood.

Early Intervention gives children opportunities to take part, try new things and be themselves, while giving parents and carers the chance to meet other families who understand.

For us, it has never just been about activities. It's about being part of a community.”

From Taking Part to Giving Back

Today, Kimberley and Luna continue to be part of Early Intervention — helping, contributing ideas and supporting other families.

Their journey reflects something at the heart of our community: families don't simply access Early Intervention. They help shape it.

Kimberley shared:

Volunteering with Early Intervention has given me the opportunity to help create those experiences for others.

Volunteering is not always about having lots of spare time – it is about finding ways to help when you can.

It is rewarding to know you are helping make a difference."

Luna said:

"I like going to sessions because it's fun and I like when there is a bouncy castle and when it's at Winford Farm and I like the pizza one and the pasta one and I like when the dogs are there."

Luna and Kimberley took part in Kiltwalk 2025 and 2026.
